How to Save a Post from X (Video, Photos, or Text)
“Save this post” means three different things depending on what’s in the post, and X handles each of them differently. Someone wanting to keep a clip needs a completely different method from someone trying to hang on to a long thread before it disappears.
So here’s the honest breakdown: what you can save from an X (Twitter) post, how to do each one, and why the platform’s own “save” button doesn’t really save anything.
First: what X actually gives you
X has Bookmarks and Likes. Both are pointers — they remember where something lives, not what it was. Nothing lands on your device. If the poster deletes the post, protects their account, or gets suspended, your bookmark turns into an empty space.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Most people who search for how to save an X post have already bookmarked it, then discovered the bookmark was worthless the moment they needed it offline. We go deeper on that in Can you save videos on X? — for now, just know that a real save means getting the actual file onto your phone or computer.
1. Saving the video from a post
This is the one X makes genuinely hard, and it’s worth understanding why.
When you long-press a photo on X, your browser or app offers to save it, because the image is served as a normal image file. Video is different: X streams it in segments through a player rather than handing over a single downloadable file, so there’s nothing for “save” to grab. That’s the gap our tool exists to close — it reads the list of video files X published for that post and hands you the actual MP4.
- Copy the post link. Tap the share icon on the post and choose Copy link. (Copying the URL from your browser’s address bar works identically.)
- Paste it into SaveXPost. Drop the link into the box at the top of the home page.
- Press Download and pick a quality. You’ll see every resolution X stored for that clip — often 360p up to 1080p, sometimes 4K.
- The file saves to your device. On Android it lands in Downloads and appears in your Gallery; on iPhone it goes to Files, and you can move it into Photos from there.
No account, no app, and nothing is added to the video — you get the file the creator uploaded. Device-specific walkthroughs: iPhone and Android.
2. Saving the photos from a post
Images are the easy case, because X doesn’t block them.
- On a phone: tap the image to open it full-screen, then press and hold and choose Save image / Download image. It goes straight to your camera roll or Downloads folder.
- On desktop: click the image to expand it, then right-click and choose Save image as…
Two things worth knowing. First, open the image full-screen first — saving from the timeline thumbnail can give you a cropped, lower-resolution version. Second, if a post has several photos, you have to save each one individually; there’s no “save all” anywhere in the interface.
3. Saving the text of a post or thread
There’s no export button for text, so pick based on how you’ll use it:
- A screenshot is fastest and preserves who said it — useful when the wording and the author both matter. The obvious downside is that it’s an image, so you can’t search or copy from it later.
- Copy the text by selecting it directly (easier on desktop than in the mobile app) and paste it wherever you keep notes. Better for searching later, but you lose the context of who posted it unless you add that yourself.
- Copy the post link into your notes alongside a line or two of your own summary. This is the one we’d actually recommend for long threads: it survives as a reference, and your summary still means something even if the original goes away.
For a long thread you care about, a screenshot of the key post plus the link is usually the most durable combination.
Which method for which post
| What you want to keep | How to save it | Ends up as |
|---|---|---|
| Video / GIF | Paste the post link into SaveXPost | An MP4 on your device |
| Photo | Open full-screen → long-press → Save image | An image in your camera roll |
| Text / thread | Screenshot, or copy the text plus the link | An image or a note |
| ”I’ll read it later” | X Bookmarks | A pointer that needs X to still be up |
Troubleshooting
- “That post is private, age-restricted, or removed.” The post has to be publicly viewable. Protected accounts and deleted posts can’t be reached by any tool — that’s a platform limitation, not a tool limitation.
- The link points to a quote-tweet. If someone quoted a post that contains the video, copy the link of the original post rather than the quote.
- You saved the image but it looks soft. You almost certainly saved the timeline thumbnail. Open the photo full-screen first, then save.
- Nothing happens when you long-press a video. Expected — see section 1. Video isn’t served as a plain file, which is exactly why the paste-the-link route exists.
Is it OK to save posts from X?
Saving a public post for your own use — rewatching something offline, keeping a copy of your own content, or archiving something you have permission to use — is generally fine. What matters is what happens next: re-uploading someone else’s video, monetising it, or passing it off as your own can infringe the creator’s copyright. If you’re unsure, assume you need the rights-holder’s permission. (Our Terms of Use cover this.)
The short version
“Saving an X post” splits three ways: photos save natively with a long-press, text needs a screenshot or a copy-paste, and video needs a tool because X never serves it as a downloadable file. Bookmarks aren’t saving at all — they’re a pointer that disappears along with the post.
For the video case, it’s one step: copy the post link, paste it into SaveXPost, pick a quality.
